The area within which the majority of an individual\'s day-to-day activities are carried out; it contains, but may be more extensive than, the action space(s) within which particular locational decisions are made. Chombart de Lauwe (1952) suggested a hierarchy of such spaces — familial, neighbourhood, economic, and urban sector — within which different activities are conducted. Many, especially those at the larger spatial scales, may be discontinuous, comprising points linked by known routes but separated by areas that are virtually unknown to the individuals concerned (cf. behavioural geography; mental map). (RJJ)
