Discrimination on the basis of age has been identified as a problem in and for geography (Chouinard and Grant, 1996). It is a problem in geography because so little geographical research examines the experiences of those other than middle-aged people; both the young and old are largely ignored. It is problem for geography because there is a range of geographical themes that should and is beginning to be pursued: the production and regulation of public space as adult space, for example, and age-specific experiences and creation of spaces (including the home: Katz and Monk, 1993; Skelton and Valentine, 1998; see children, geography and). (GP)
