A scaled representation of some aspect of the world. A paper map is an analogue representation of part of the Earth\'s surface that is additionally distorted to make it lie flat through the use of a map projection. Photographs and the architect\'s scale models are other examples. Traditional telephone circuits and radio represent sound by scaled electrical signals. Analogue representations are increasingly being replaced by digital ones, which instead use combinations of symbols in some alphabet that are understood by both the creator and the user of the representation (cf. symbolization). (MG) |
