A predecessor of economic geography, mainly concerned with presenting factual material about economic activity in various parts of the world. Such compilations — of which the many editions of G.G. Chisholm\'s Handbook of commercial geography (1889) was the most famous — characterized an era in which geography was promoted as a major vehicle for informing colonial policies. Chisholm\'s book had two main parts, the first detailing the geography of production of various commodities and the second providing a world regional catalogue of what was produced where. (RJJ)
