A process of spatial change generated by centrifugal forces (see centrifugal and centripetal forces). Within urban areas, demands for space and the desire to escape the congestion, pollution and high land values of the central business district and surrounding areas are encouraging commercial and industrial businesses to move their premises to the suburbs and beyond, where custom-built, accessible industrial estates, office parks and shopping complexes are common. At a larger scale, the negative externalities of big cities encourage movement of both businesses and population to smaller settlements (a process also known as deconcentration: see also counterurbanization). (RJJ) |
