A location for industrial activity, the primary purpose of which is to produce for export. The term is usually applied to a location where cheap labour is available and industrial activity is not closely linked with other elements of the local economy. Export platforms are typically found in underdeveloped countries where labour costs are kept down by low living standards and sometimes also by governments which condone poor working conditions and discourage unionization. Because of their external orientation, export platforms often contribute little to the development of the host nation. (DMS) |
