The biological capacity to reproduce. The term may refer to the biological capacity of males, females or couples, though the focus is usually on women. Apart from temporary periods of sterility, women are generally fecund (i.e. are biologically capable of bearing children) from menarche to menopause. The term is distinct from fertility which refers to the actual childbearing of an individual or population. (PEO)
