The creation of an estimated value for an observation unit — usually through the application of statistical models such as regression. Of the two types of estimate, a forecast is less certain — because it involves extrapolation from the known to the unknown — than a prediction: a forecast is an estimated value for an observation unit not involved in the calibration of the regression equation whereas a prediction is an estimated value for one of the observations used in the calibration. (RJJ) |
