A port designed as a free trade area, so that exports are exempt from customs duties and subject to minimal customs regulations. Hong Kong is a significant contemporary example, although its future status is somewhat in doubt since its return by the UK to Chinese rule in 1997. From 1945 to 1954, Trieste in the northern Adriatic Sea was a free port under joint British and American supervision, prior to incorporation into Italy. (MB) |
