A tabulation of the number of occurrences of the values of a variable into classes, which may be arbitrarily defined. An empirical frequency distribution is usually displayed ordinally, as in:

frequency distribution
||number of shops per settlement| | number of settlements|
| 0| | 20|
| 1-2| | 15|
| 3-4| | 4|
| 5-6| | 3|
| 7+| | 1|
| |This information can be displayed graphically as a histogram (see figure).
A theoretical frequency distribution (such as the normal distribution) is a tabulation of the expected number of occurrences in each class according to an algebraic formulation (usually known as the \'generating function\'). Most theoretical distributions are smooth because they are based on infinitely large populations: one frequently used is the Poisson distribution, which has the special characteristic that its mean is the same as its variance. (RJJ)
