A region of mixed land uses at the edge of a built-up area whose heterogeneity reflects the concentration of activities propelled there by centrifugal forces (see centrifugal and centripetal forces). The study of fringe belts is central to Conzen\'s method of town-plan analysis, which focuses on townscape morphology (see also edge city; rural-urban fringe; zonal model). (RJJ)
