A moral and political philosophy which prioritizes individual freedom or liberty. In a libertarian society, as described by Robert Nozick (1974) for example, individuals are entitled to do as they please with their holdings, including their property (providing that it has been acquired justly), and with themselves, so long as they do not infringe the same freedom for others. The role of the state is minimal, and should not be extended to taxing some citizens so as to provide for the needs of others. There is no obligation for anyone to do anything for anyone else unless this is their free choice. This form of \'right libertarianism\' is sometimes contrasted with anarchism as \'left libertarianism\'. (DMS)
