material orientation |

|
The tendency of an economic activity to locate close to sources of materials. This is likely to be the case where the cost of the material(s) in question forms a large share of total cost and/or where material costs are subject to substantial spatial variations. Historically, the importance of material orientation in industrial location has declined, with a reduction in the use of bulky materials and in transfer costs. Industries that remain predominantly material-oriented are largely confined to primary metal manufacturing and the processing of agricultural products. (Cf. market orientation.)Â (DMS) |
