A classification of data types for statistical analysis in which four levels are generally recognized:
{img src=show_image.php?name=2022.gif } nominal, in which each individual (member of a population or sample) is allocated to one out of two or more exclusive categories; {img src=show_image.php?name=2022.gif } ordinal, in which either the individuals or the categories to which they are allocated are rank-ordered on some criterion; {img src=show_image.php?name=2022.gif } interval, which involves a quantitative assessment of the distance between two observations along a predetermined scale (such as °C); and {img src=show_image.php?name=2022.gif } ratio, which allows relative quantitative assessment of differences along a scale. Thus nominal measurement would allocate three million people to Birmingham and nine million to London; ordinal measurement of the same data would say that London is bigger than Birmingham; interval measurement provides the information that London has six million more people than Birmingham; and ratio measurement indicates that London is three times the size of Birmingham. (RJJ) |
