Often used as an adjectival synonym for a large city, especially, though not exclusively, one with major concentrations of political and cultural power. The term is also used to apply to centres of colonial and imperial power, both the countries themselves (e.g. France was metropolitan within its empire) and their capital cities (such as Paris and London). (RJJ) |
