A statistical procedure for estimating the characteristics of individuals from knowledge of the aggregate characteristics of the population to which they belong. For example, a census may indicate the number of public housing units in a small area, plus the number of single-parent heads of household and the number of households living below the poverty level. Microsimulation estimates the number in the area having all of those characteristics — i.e. the number of single-parent household heads living below the poverty level in a public housing unit. (Cf. ecological fallacy; entropy-maximizing models.) (RJJ)
