multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) |

Methods for simplifying and replicating a matrix showing the distances between a set of points (n), while as far as possible retaining the relative ordering of those distances. MDS locates the points in a smaller number of dimensions than n, and so reduces a multi-dimensional representation to more comprehensible proportions. It can also be used to transform maps, basing them, for example, on the time-distance between places rather than the crow-flies distance. (RJJ)
