A family of statistical procedures (including those associated with the general linear model) that can be applied to interval and ratio data (see measurement), providing that they meet certain criteria, most of which assume that the data are normally distributed (see normal distribution). These criteria are much more stringent than those which apply to nonparametric statistics. If parametric procedures are applied to non-normally distributed data, the estimated parameters (e.g. of a regression equation) are likely to be either biased or inefficient (or both), in which case that data should either be transformed to meet the criteria (see transformation of variables) or subjected to non-parametric tests only. (RJJ) |
