A \'picture element\', or the primitive element in a digital image composed of a rectangular raster of uniform elements. In Earth observation by remote sensing the size of an image pixel determines the image\'s spatial resolution, and is normally expressed in units of length on the ground. For example, the pixel size of the Landsat Thematic Mapper is 30 m, which is sufficient to allow crops to be identified in large fields, but not detailed enough to identify individual dwellings in many parts of the world. The images created by computer monitors are composed of pixels, as are the images captured by digital cameras. (MG) |
