A map describing spatial variation in the likelihood of an event. The symbols might depict likelihood directly, as on a map showing probability of burglary or arson (MacEachren, 1992), or the map might hold likelihood constant and describe spatial variation in the magnitude of an event with that likelihood. The latter strategy is common on maps of environmental hazards such as floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. For example, a map of the 100-year flood (with an annual probability of 0.01) might not only delineate the flood zone but describe the expected inundation in feet or metres. (MM)
