regional class alliance

A coherent response by members of a region\'s different classes (notably labour, capital, and the local state apparatus) to economic problems there. Such a compromise is agreed by parties who otherwise might be in conflict, in order both to promote profitability (for capital) and to ensure the continued availability of jobs (for labour) — and thereby also sustaining the state\'s legitimacy. According to Harvey (1985), such alliances are necessary to the continued reproduction of capitalism in a locality: \'if regional structures and class alliances did not already exist, then the processes at work under capitalism would necessarily create them\'. (See also urban entrepreneurialism.) (RJJ)
