The manner in which participants in the productive process relate to one another, sometimes referred to as the social relations of production. In Marxian economics, relations of production correspond to a definite stage in the development of the productive forces. The social relations of slavery involved producers owning workers; under feudalism there existed rights whereby landowners could appropriate some of the production of others; while under the social relations of capitalism workers sell their labour on the open market. The tension between the forces of production and the social relations of production is held by Marxists to be responsible for changes in the mode of production. (See also class.)Â (DMS) |
