|
A run-down section of an urban area, usually close to the city centre, where transient populations are concentrated; many of the individuals are on the margins of economic survival (i.e. \'on the skids\') and suffer a variety of complaints, such as alcoholism. Skid rows are especially characteristic of North American cities, where they offer temporary homes in poor-quality rental accommodation for transient male visitors; they now also house permanent residents without access to conventional homes. In the zonal model of urban residential structure skid row occupies part of the zone in transition. (See also anomie; homelessness; inner city.)Â (RJJ)
