The kin, neighbours and friends to whom an individual is tied socially, usually by shared values, attitudes and aspirations. Such networks may be spatially concentrated, as both cause and effect: people choose to live close to others in their network, thereby maximizing the potential for contact and interaction; and people join networks with their neighbours, reflecting the influence of distance decay on social interaction (cf. community). (RJJ)
