spontaneous settlement |

|
A residential district developed by its inhabitants, often after illegally occupying the land, in which both the housing and the public facilities are constructed outside the usual market and public sector mechanisms. The term spontaneous implies that there is no \'forethought\' or \'planning\' prior to occupation of the land, although increasingly such clandestine settlements, including a basic infrastructure, are the result of \'planned invasions\' by their initial occupants (cf. squatter settlement). (RJJ) |
