The illegal occupation of land and dwellings. In advanced industrial societies it is usually associated with the occupation of empty, possibly dilapidated, dwellings awaiting demolition, by individuals and groups who are either unable to afford (or choose not to afford) homes through conventional market mechanisms or are ineligible for the allocation of public housing. Some countries\' laws give a degree of security of occupation — known as \'squatter\'s rights\' — making eviction of squatters difficult for the legal owners. Most squatting occurs in inner-city areas, especially districts characterized as slums. (See also squatter settlement.) (RJJ) |
