The use of a data set for research projects other than that for which it was originally collected. Increasingly data sets, such as those obtained through censuses and questionnaires, are stored in computer databases and housed in archives from where they are made available to other researchers. This further use of data allows both efficiency in data collection and the conduct of comparative studies (across space and time) that otherwise would be impossible: increasingly, researchers funded by public bodies are required to deposit their data in archives (such as the Data Archive at the University of Essex, which has been operating since 1967). (RJJ)
